SILVER BULLET

Silver Bullet is a 1985 horror film directed by Daniel Attias, based on Stephen King’s novella Cycle of the Werewolf. It combines elements of a supernatural thriller, a coming-of-age story, and a classic whodunit, delivering an entertaining mix of suspense and small-town horror. With a screenplay by King himself, the film is notable for its blend of campy charm and genuine scares.

The story is set in the small town of Tarker’s Mills, where a series of brutal murders begins to terrify the community. The residents believe a human killer is responsible, but wheelchair-bound teenager Marty Coslaw (played by Corey Haim) discovers the truth: a werewolf is behind the killings. Marty, his sister Jane (Megan Follows), and their alcoholic yet lovable uncle, Red (Gary Busey), band together to uncover the werewolf’s identity and stop the creature before it strikes again.

The film strikes a balance between campy horror and genuine suspense. The practical effects, particularly the werewolf transformation scenes, are a mix of effective and dated, adding to its retro charm. The small-town setting enhances the atmosphere, creating a sense of isolation that heightens the tension.

While not as critically acclaimed as other Stephen King adaptations, Silver Bullet has become a cult classic, appreciated for its nostalgic tone, engaging characters, and straightforward storytelling. It’s a film that fans of werewolf lore and 1980s horror continue to enjoy for its blend of scares, heart, and King’s signature storytelling.
